SUGI NO IE – House to enjoy the margins

“SUGI NO IE” is located on a hill about four Kilometers from the sea. It’s in a residential area where a pleasant beach breeze could pass through. A refreshing breeze blows in summer, and winter has the longest sunshine in Tohoku with warm sunlight. How to design the most of these benefits was a major issue of this house building.
In the summer, the coastal area of Iwaki City can provide a comfortable living environment with almost no air conditioning by properly controlling ventilation, solar radiation, and heat insulation. The design of this house reduces the heat load by minimizing the windows on the east side and the west side where the sun shines directly from the side in the morning and evening in summer. The hot air on the roof surface was exhausted from the ventilation openings provided above the east and west slit windows to adjust the thermal environment.
The cedar board covering on the outer wall has a heat insulating effect. The deep eaves have the role of blocking the strong sunlight in the summer and suppressing the temperature rise inside and outside the walls. As a result, the solar radiation load on the roof will increase, so careful insulation and ventilation of the attic are essential.
The deep eaves space is also a feature of Japanese houses in hot and humid climates.Since ancient times, under the eaves, which is called ENGAWA in Japanese, is an intermediate area that connects the outside and the inside, and is also a place of relaxation. The owner is also using it as a place to enjoy evening coolness and meals.
The garden in front of the terrace, which is now 8 years old, has become a lush wooded garden that blends with the home, changing with the seasons. The owner says, “we enjoy our lives here and we really love this house.” and it’s all about the designer.
Natural materials become tastier as they age.The owner will have to repair it and modify it, but that will deepen their attachment.”The housing is not complete yet.” Every time I visit here, I strengthen my thoughts.Performance is also important, but the comfort of the five senses, which cannot be measured numerically, provides the function and proportion of a house.”SUGI NO IE” is advancing to endless completion, combining such design concept and the sensibilities of the owner.
